iMusic Puzzle – iPhone Review

Anyone who had a 5th generation iPod will remember some of the games that came included with it. You had solitaire and that bat and bricks game, but you also had that music game. You know, the one where it played you part of a song and you had to guess which one it was? Well iMusic Puzzle is the iPod Touch’s version of this game. Except for the fact you have to buy it of course but these developer types have got to make a living.

The main premise of iMusic Puzzle is that it takes a clip from a song from your library and divides it up into several pieces (jigsaw ones – thus puzzle). Tis your noble mission to reassemble the clip within the time limit. After several rounds of this you’ll be challenged with a bonus game. This will either be pairs (match up clips) or clips from several different songs will be thrown at you and you have to drag the ones from the same song to the appropriate place. Four sets of rounds and this comprises the arcade mode. A quick play mode is also available where the player can choose exactly which songs they want to play with.

The joys of games such as these is the puzzles vary as far as your music collection goes. Everytime you add a song to your iPod thats another potential puzzle. However being the imbecile that I am I chose to play this game when I only had two audio tracks. One them being a song by The Used and the other being a list of birthday messages for Stevie from the 3rd episode of the 7BitArcade podcast. I can thus confirm that the more songs you have the better this game is. I never want to hear that damn Used song again having listened to it so very many times.

Ponder I did on what genres of music would work well with this game. I can imagine that Drum N Bass would certainly make things challenging. Some classical tracks might be quite fun to piece together too. I personally look forward to putting some Kenny Loggins tracks on there because that my friends is how I roll. On the highway to the motherfudging danger zone.

The game is graphically pleasing and Open Feint enabled, though it could do with a button in there to reach your OF stats. The arcade mode is fun but I think this game would benefit enormously from some kind of endless mode. I assume there will be some sort of maximum high score you can achieve in arcade mode and then no further. An endless mode would be great for people battling for the top Open Feint score. You can always try and get one point higher. We are all competitive bastards afterall.

For what you’re getting I’m hoping this game will be at the 59p mark. If so it’ll be a nice little purchase. Its 3.5 out of 5 Puzz 3Ds from me.
