
“Heads will roll!” – (Reviewed on The 7 Bit Audiocast Episode 4: Gamers Have Souls)
Apocalyptos is the latest release from Sudden Games and its all about the disembodied heads. We back track to the days of pyramids and human sacrifice (*sigh*, I miss those days) and the gods are in for a treat because people are being beheaded by the dozen. The heads are flying all over the place and its your job to bounce ‘em and spike ‘em in the series of mini games the game comprises of. That’s 40 OpenFeint enabled games with three difficulties for each… well, sort of.
Sadly after the first 6 challenges the games start to repeat so rather than 40 different levels we have 6 different levels with 5 varying difficulties. The difficulty increases by giving you more heads to deal with for a longer period of time and by throwing in the occasional sack of flour to temporarily stun you for a few seconds. Unfortunately the fact that there is only really 6 levels makes the experience somewhat repetitive. The three different difficulty modes (beginner, advanced and expert) don’t reveal any new level additions either, rather just an increase in the frequency the severed heads are spamming out the top of the pyramid.
However I cannot lay claim to having completed all the levels on every single difficulty. My excuse being that level 36 on beginner mode signaled my inevitable downfall. This particular task requires you to bounce heads from one side of the screen to the other without dropping them. After countless attempts I concluded it was literally impossible to stop more than the required 60% of the heads falling off the screen due to the sheer amount being launched at you at once. If you have managed to accomplish this feat then I take my metaphorical hat off to you sir/madam, you have outgamed me.
It’s not all woe though, as previously mentioned the game is OpenFeint enabled, the graphics are decent and the audio can’t be faulted. Nevertheless the repetitive game play dooms this little number to a low score. What this game needs is more variation. There may only be 6 levels but they provide some fun game play on the first go. If we had 15 different levels with three modes of difficulty the enjoyment would increase massively and that would be a satisfactory amount for the 59p price tag. The ‘40 challenging levels’ in the app description is misleading and may well lead to some disappointed customers.
Apocalyptos certainly has potential but needs a lot of work. It’s 2.5/5 sacrificial heads from me.
