Polarbit’s ‘Fuzzies’ is essentially Lemmings for the iPhone so before calling fowl it is worth noting the utterly disappointing ‘Lemmings Online’ currently available on the iTunes Store. This attempted remake did not meet our Lemming needs so Fuzzies makes a welcome addition to the fray. If you are unaware of Lemmings then finger wagging is in order, your gaming knowledge is not up to scratch my good reader! I shall forgive you on this occasion and gently remind you that Lemmings is a real time strategy game whereby you must assist a group of hapless, ever forward marching, mammals from point A to B. Tools for doing so come in the form of giving individual lemmings temporary jobs such as block building, digging and parachuting. So if you replace lemmings with monkeys and update the pixel graphics to shell shaded visuals then you get Fuzzies.
Theres 28 levels to keep you occupied with the option of trying to ‘5 star’ every level (i.e. save well above the target amount of monkeys). The controls are a doddle, simply click on a task then click on a monkey with a pause and fast forward button on hand as well. The progression through levels provides a steady learning curve, introducing you to the tools one at a time and then gradually bumping up the difficulty before you reach the final challenge. The optional audio is also to a good standard with the music not being of the sort to make your ear drums bleed after five minutes of playing the game.
Fuzzies is excellently addictive which is unsurprising as it descends from one of the most addictive computer games ever made. Should you find yourself with a copy you’re more than likely to be playing it through til completion which should take the average player an hour and a half to two hours with maybe an extra couple of hours or so to get full marks on all the levels. This would probably be my only scruple with the monkey madness as the game stands at a price of £1.19 on the App Store. If this price was 59p I’d probably write Fuzzies off as being a perfect piece of pocket entertainment. As it stands I’ll be a little picky and say that maybe we could have a few more levels in there and a bit of a change of scenery from time to time. Monkeys live in jungles, its no lie but what was rememberable about the original, classic Lemmings was the variety of landscapes ranging from wintery scenes to the fiery depths of hell, all with their own unique traps.
All in all Fuzzies tickled my banana and its a very healthy 4 out of 5 clockwork monkeys from me.
