10 Must Have Games For The Dreamcast – Part 2

January 18, 2010 Features Written by admin

Its time for the second installment of 10 Must Have Games For The Dreamcast. We are down to our top 5 games ladies and gentlemen, lets carry on with number 5!

#5 – Space Channel 5

Space Channel 5

Isn’t it ironic that our 5th must have game for the Dreamcast would be Space Channel 5? Well space cats its Ulala here dancing into your hearts with probably the most iconic dance game ever made. This game has got style and its even got a sequel (that was only released in Japan due to the death of the Dreamcast), Space Channel 5 Part 2. It is a must for any Michael Jackson fan out there because this game was part directed by and starred the man him self (known as Space Michael, he even dances!) Its simple, you have to copy the aliens’ dance moves and get a high viewer rating to move onto the next part of the game. (I’ll be honest, I suck at this game but only because I have no rhythm what-so ever) Up! Left! Right! Down! Chu, Chu, Chu!

#4 – Samba De Amigo

Samba De Amigo

Again, another game made by Sonic Team while they were taking drugs! This time it looks like they’ve been watching Animal Planet (it figures…). Samba De Amigo was a very innovative game, it used motion controls in the form of maracas to control Amigo (the monkey). The game involves shaking your maraca controllers to the beats of the music when the blue circles meet with the rings on the screen. I wouldn’t plan to have a 5 hour Samba De Amigo Dance-a-thon, after a good session your arms will ache like you’ve just been tied with rope and pulled by two Mini Coopers on each side. Samba De Amigo didn’t do well when it was released due to one problem. It costs A LOT, and, due to it being a rare game, it still costs a lot, but its worth it.

#3 – Shenmue

Shenmue

Right, in at number 3 its Shenmue (the first one of course) Most of you Shenmue/Dreamcast fanboys are probably saying “WHAT? WHY ISN’T SHENMUE AT NUMBER ONE?”

Well that’s simple. Shenmue ISN’T the best game ever on the Dreamcast, but I admit it is really good and appreciate it took lots of money to make. Right, anyway, Shenmue was released in 1999 and is, like Rez, one of the most sort after games on the Dreamcast. On eBay this game normally sells for over £20 but hey, looking at the price for games for current consoles, this price is a bargain because it doesn’t really look dated at all. That’s how detailed this game is. You play as Ryo Hazuki and take full control of your character from morning to night. There are lots of different things to do because you can interact with pretty much anything, there is even a SEGA Saturn you can use in your house! Sadly the only downside to the game is it can get a bit repetitive at some parts but yes, give this game a go.

#2 – Jet Set Radio

Next up its our number 2 , Jet Set Radio! This game amazed me with how good it was when I first played it and it still does. It is known as one of the first games to use cell-shaded graphics in game play so its kinda special. The story of the game starts out explaining to you about a city in Asia called Tokyo-To and that three gangs, Poison Jam, Noise Tanks and the GG’s, are battling it out to win over the streets. You start out as Beat (the one on the front cover with the glasses), a new joiner to the GG’s. The aim of the game is to spray graffiti where the red arrows point to in the given time limit, its really fun to play once you get the hang of it and I would recommend it to anyone.

#1 – Sonic Adventure

Sonic

Well of course a Sonic game was going to be number one on our top 10 must have games for the Dreamcast, I mean, he is SEGA’s mascot after all! Sonic Adventure is most likely one of the best Sonic titles ever released on a SEGA console. The game has a great story to it and you can go through each characters’ journey through the story. The controls are really good and straight forward so if you have played Sonic games like Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog (they really were not the best examples because both those games are very flawed) then give this one a try. This game did so well it was the best selling game on the Dreamcast.

Please feel free to comment and let us know what your 10 must own Dreamcast games are.

I was sharpening my knives in case JSR wasn’t included in the list but I’m glad to see…wait a minute NUMBER F**KING TWO?!!!

I really liked Athlete Kings, aka Decathlete, which played much in the same way as international track and field. What made it enjoyable was the caricature stereotype playable characters from each country.

As much as I loved sonic adventure, it doesn’t hold up well these days. The ‘open world’ is badly designed in that it is rarely clear exactly where you have to go, it’s mostly open space for the sake of being open space. And don’t get me started on big the cat! The chaos however are utterly brilliant creations and kept me coming back to that game fir years and years and years.

I have 2 copies of samba de amigo maracas round mine, so does that clearly shows I have mental problems. My samba sessions would last hours at a time, which has resulted in
    perpetually bulging forearms.
